Gravel roads and level sites with good space between.

We wanted a park near the black Canyon National Park. This KOA is right in Montrose and on the road to the park.

I pulled into this Koa, was told to take any spot, when we left for dinner, someone else took our spot. They do not assign tent sites. To make matters worse, at 10:00 at night, two customers showed up without a place to camp. We spent the next 30 minutes negotiating the situation ourselves, while waking up and disturbing other customers trying to figure it out. We counted 8 unique customers trying to fit into 6 sites. When I explained it to the manager, instead of being conciliatory, they ranted about the good things they've done and how the map for 6 sites was simply wrong(despite the fact that there is no room for 8 customers). We parked on some gravel and didn't set up our tent. There was no discount, no refund, and the manager stated that all they could do was apologize. I disagree. Amenities were great; justifying the single star. UPDATE: just counted six picnic tables.

The canyon is breathtaking, so worth the time it took to get there! We didn't see another soul on the trail either. Will definitely revisit at some point and camp for a couple days.

Nice park, excellent staff. Very nice facilities: hot, clean hot tub with good jets, nice pool, laundry, restrooms, showers. Everything is in excellent condition and is top quality. The cabins look adorable. The roads and lots are nice rock with manicured grass patio area. Staff came by and offered and opened up the back gate for an easier exit since we were on the end spot on a row, which required a sharp U-turn. We really appreciated this service. We would definitely stay here again.

KOA members get another 10% discount.

Long story short if you have a tent look elsewhere. The tenting "sites" here is just a strip of grass outside the fence of the campground. The area around it doesn't look the best which isn't super great on the wrong side of the fence and parking outside the campground. It seems very low effort for tents, especially with the high price. Surrounding parks should have better prices and individual sites if they have availability. Amenities were very nice though with clean bathrooms and showers.
