Developed Park Service campground on the banks of the Gunnison River with drive-in and walk-in sites. Though technically a part of the adjacent Curecanti National Recreation Area, the East Portal area can only be accessed through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and the seasonal East Portal Road, a very,very steep road (16% grades) that travels 7 miles down to the river. Truly located on the river, the campground offers easy river access for fishermen and hikers. Adjacent to the campground is the historic East Portal of the Gunnison Tunnel, the diversion dam, and operating building.
Take the drive to the bottom. Much respect for those who hike in and out of there.
Had a great experience here with my son. Was very quiet when we were here. I would highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys camping/fishing.
Campgrounds like this one make me wish I had a Class B or small Class C. This must be the best campground in the Black Canyon National Park.
